Blues In The Night

6 July 2001

Steve,

For your information. Jean DuShon, who starred in "Blues in the Night", is a nightclub performer who has enjoyed many of Johnny Mercer's tunes throughout the years. Not only did she star in "Blues" on Broadway, but in "Bubbling Brown Sugar" with Cab Calloway and in "What the Wine Sellers Buy" with Glynn Turman and Dick Anthony Williams (Tony nominated, Best Actor).

Miss DuShon also starred as Bessie Smith in Chicago's long-running hit, "Little Dreamer - A Nite in the Life of Bessie Smith" and off-Broadway in "The Crystal Tree" and "Helen of Troy". She recorded three albums for Chess Records and was brought to Atlantic Records by Ahmet Ertegun after he saw her perform at NY's Roundtable. He assigned the young Phil Spector to record her. Miss DuShon has worked with Count Basie, Miles Davis, George Shearing, Wes Montgomery, Jack McDuff (with whom she recorded the album, "The Fifth Dimension") and with many R & B stars like Etta James, Little Richard, Marvin Gaye, B.B. King and Smokey Robinson.

Of Johnny Mercer, she told me, "Johnny Mercer is one of the great composers. He ranks with the best of them. I have enjoyed listening to and singing his music over the years. He is also a great singer."

Jean DuShon lives in New York and has plans to return to Broadway and recording. Still a fabulous singer, she wants to record the great composers, like Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington, Richard Rogers and Gus Kahn.

Here are a couple of pictures of the great Jean DuShon.

The first picture is of Alberta Hunter, visiting left to right, Debbie Shapiro, Jean DuShon and Leslie Uggams backstage during Broadway's "Blues in the Night". The other picture is a publicity shot of Jean DuShon during "Bessie Smith".

My 80 year old aunt requested that I go on the internet and try and find the words to the song.

My mama done tol' me When I was in knee pants (pigtails) My mama done tol' me-(son (hon') A woman'll sweet talk, (A man's gonna sweet talk,) And give ya the big eye, But when the sweet talkin's done A woman's a two-face (A man is a two-face) A worrisome thing who'll leave ya t'sing The blues in the night, Now the rain's a-failin', Hear the train a-callin', Whooee,(My mama done tol' me) Hear that lonesome whistle Blowin' 'cross the trestle, Whooee,(My mama done tol' me) A whooee-duh-whooee, O'l clickety clack's A-echoin' back The blues in the night, The evenin' breeze'll start The trees to cryin' And the moon'll hide its light, When you get the blues in the night.

Take my word, the mocking bird'll Sing the saddest kind of song, He knows things are wrong And he's right. [whistle]

From Natchez to Mobile, From Memphis to St. JO, Where ever the four winds blow; I been in some big towns An' heard me some big talk, But there is one thing I know, A woman's a two-face, (A man is a two-face), A worrisome thing Who'll leave ya t'sing The blues in the night. [hum] My mama was right, There's blues in the night.

Thanks for the lyrics! The original title of that jazzy WB-movie was HOT NOCTURNE, but later changed into the title of the Oscar-nominated smash hit by the successful team Arlen und Mercer. Excellent conversions, that became blockbusters as well, are by Glenn Miller and Ray Charles. Musical critics and jazz musicians (especially the blacks) praised this song for its true blues feeling. Greetings from Cologne, Thomas
