: I looking for the lyrics of "One for my baby and one more for the road". : Where I can find it? ____________________- This 1943 tune(music by Harold Arlen( is from the picture :The Sky's the Limit" ..done by Fred Astaire in the film). Most closely attributed to Frank Sinatra's rendition. This piece is also typically done my a male vocalist, however, in the broadway show DREAM, Matgaret Whiting did a splendid rendition of the piece (it was her first piece in the show).

It's a quarter to three, There's no one in the place except you and me, So, set 'em up Joe, I've got a little story you ought'a know, We're drinking my friend, To the end of a brief episode, Make it one for my baby and one more for the road.

I got the routine, So put another nickel in the machine, I'm feelin so bad, I wish you'd make the music dreamy and sad, Could tell you a lot But you've got to be true to your code, Make it one for your baby and one more for the road.

You'd never know it, But buddy, I'm kind of poet And I've gotta lotta things to say. And when I'm gloomy, You simply gotta listen to me, Until it's talked away.

Well, that's how it goes And Joe, I know you're anxious to close, So thanks for the cheer, I hope you don't my bending your ear, The torch that I've found, Must be drowned or it soon might explode, Make it one for my baby And one more for the road.

I am a singer in a local community chorus and am
scheduled to sing "One For My Baby" in our spring
concert, which as I write this, is about a month away.
I am also a big Sinatra fan and would like to sing
the version Frank Sinatra recorded in the 50's, how-
ever, the only sheet music I have been able to find is
totally different from the Sinatra version...The piano
part sounds more like the Roy Rogers classic "Happy
Trails" and it is written about a third higher...
Is it possible to find the same arrangement Sinatra
used and if so, how could I go about getting it?
Thank you, in advance for your help...Love your site!!

I am resubmitting this posting by request...I am a
singer in a local community chorus, and am scheduled
to sing "One For My Baby" in an upcoming show. Need to
locate the Nelson Riddle arrangement of this song, used
in Sinatra's 1957 rendition (had piano, strings and
sax). Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
The only thing I,ve been able to find in sheet music
is nowhere close to the Sinatra version, and is written
a third higher...

Thanks!

Mike Jackson

: The best recording of One For My Baby was done by Johnny Mercer himself. Can't remember the label..maybe Capitol. This was the real "down on his luck Joe" in a bar-room at "quarter to three". Much superior to the Sinatra.
: nlbates1@aol.com.

Believe the Mercer recording contained an alternative line (towards end): "Don't let it be said ...that little Freddy can't carry his load...(just) make it one for my baby and one more for the road".
