Wow, I'm just so blown away by your site. I was just doing research on Moon River and happened on to your site. It is so incredibly rich w/JM's songs. I never knew he wrote so many beautiful songs. I'd heard so many but never knew they were his. You've done good, real good. I'm going to Tower Records tonight to try and find some CDs recording his stuff. Thanks again, Mike

Two things missing in most of those many tributes to Johnny: His droll sense of humor and his love of jazz. You want a great tune? Try (my man) Jack Teagarden on "Cassanova's Lament". The program at the famous 92nd Street "Y" in NYC, recollecting his life in show business, while singing his many hits is a must for any Mercer fan. You did a good thing here, bless you.

Confusion! I just bought the "My Huckleberry Friend" CD. A friend in Japan bought one with the same title and found 8 cuts with The Notables. This one has none. Can't explain it. Cost $18 to find out.

I play guitar and sing and have entertained for many years. Mr. Mercer was one of the greatest American song writers. He was a poet set to music. I still enjoy his music, I was a movie tonight where one of his songs was played. They keep recording his records and they still sound great.

Great to have a wedbsite for Johnny Mercer. I so often think of the many phrases & clauses of his that are a part of our culture: e.g. "My Mama done tol' me," "Huckleberry friend," "irresistible (sp?) force," "old immovable object," "accentuate the positive," "screwy, ballyhooey Hollywood," and on and on. Thank you!

How lovely to find this Mercerland - how I miss having him in the same world. I grew up hearing that infectious voice on radio and records and now I sing his glorious songs in my cabaret act. I've collected his sheet music for over 30 years and keep looking. Clint Eastwood should be dunked in the swamp for covering JM's songs with meaningless dialogue in that miserable version of "Midnight . . ." Only the heavenly "Skylark" and "This Time the Dream's On Me" got their due. Thank you for this place to learn more about The Man - I'll visit often!

My family and I love Johnny songs. We just return from vacation and stop off in Savannah for several days. What a beautiful city. We saw Johnny home in Savannah and also visited his grave site. A wonderful and peaceful setting overlooking the river.Hanging moss from the trees shaded his ground from the hot sun. " Sings With The Angels " is written on his tomestone. I believe that indeed.... The Angels surely must be enjoying his music just as we continue too.. Thanks for sharing your music with us......

the 40's were a wonderful time for music. I can remember "your hit parade' AND THE EXCITEMENT WE FELT AS THE TOP TEN FOR THAT WEEK WERE PLAYED. BACK THEN WE ONLY HAD "the" SONGS THE WHOLE COUNTRY WAS SINGING, NOT DIFFERENT CATAGORIES, WHEN A SONG WAS A HIT IT WAS EVERYWHERE YOU WENT ALL DAY LONG. HUMMED WHISTELED AND SUNG BY EVERYONE.(15 CENT SONG BOOKS WERE HAD BY MOST FOLKS) AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT JOHNNY MERCER SONGS WERE ALWAYS RISING UP THE LIST, ON THE TOP AND HANGING AROUND THE TOP. iT WAS 'SCRUMPTIOUS! THEY WERE SUCH HAPPY,FLAT-OUT FUN SONGS. I THINK OF "JUBILATION t. cORNPONE" OLD BLOW YOUR OWN HORN PONE.NOW WHO COULD RESIST SINGING OUT ON THAT ONE. THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN I GET STARTED!'SCUSE ME PLEASE I GOTTA GO PLAY,"SKYLARK" A FEW DOZEN TIMES.I LOVE A MERCER TUNE, LOVE TO ALL YOU CATS,PAT JASTRAM

Hi! I'd just like to say that this is an excellent page! Also, I am related to Johnny. He's my third cousin! Let's see if I can get this right, on my mom's dad's side. He was my mom's dad's sister's son! *blink* okay that's confusing. ;) But he used to visit my mom when she was little and help her with her poetry! ^_^ So anyway, I don't live in Savannah anymore but I visit there every year. Anyway great page! I'll be sure to tell everyone about it. :)

Back in the early 70's I knew Johnny Mercer breifly, sadly, it was about the time when he started suffering from bad headaches and we know ahet terrible things that led to! I was producing some big-band albums with an outfit called The Harry Roche Constellation and my associate, Ken Barnes, lent Johnny a couple of the albums. He loved them and agreed to come to the studio and cut a couple of numbers with us. This led to his making his two last albums, My Huckleberry Friend and another of which I no longer have a copy. By this time, matters had been taken out of my hands and that was the end of my association with one of the greatest popular poets of the century - they just don't write them like that any more.
