(Or, was he just putting together words that made a great song???) Thanks!

Comments: This is my second visit to the Johnny Mercer archives/guestbook. Am completely
enthralled with the great songs Mr.
Mercer wrote during his illustrious career. Incidentally, I recently purchased "THE COMPLETE JOHNNY MERCER
SONGBOOKS" on Verve Records. This is an
excellent compilation consisting of three CD's performed by various artists.
It was released in 1998 and is still
readily available. All of the songs are,
of course, written by Johnny Mercer.
Perhaps Frank Sinatra summed it up
perfectly years ago when he said, "A
Johnny Mercer lyric is all the wit you
wish you had and all the love you ever
lost." Well stated, Mr. Sinatra, and
here's another salute to Johnny Mercer!
Sleep well, my friend.

Comments: First took notice of Johnny Mercer thanks to the Midnight Savanna book. At that time, small bits of his groove landed for me. Most was well beyond me (or rather, I thought (knew?) it wasn't worth my time, subtle scholar that I was and naive simpleton that he seemed). That, as they say, was then; 2001? Presently, Alison Krauss and Johnny Mathis pointed me back to look more closely at Mr. Mercer's body of work.

Thank you for making a place to do just that.

Comments: For those puzzled by the lyrics to "Satin Doll" all I can tell you is that the song is another one of Mercer's
jump on the bandwagon and cash in on an established hit hack jobs. Don't get me wrong, I love many of Mercer's lyrics, but he also wrote a lot of stinkers and "Satin Doll" is one of them.

Those lyrics are a challenge for any singer to tell a coherent story with because of their shifting ambiguous point of view. Sometimes the singer seems to be talking to himself, but then the POV shifts abruptly and he's suddenly carrying on a dialogue with an unknown third party who occassionally tosses in a line of his own: "Careful amigo you're flippin, she speaks Latin".

Who is the singer addressing when he says "Telephone numbers, well you know"?
And who is "Uno" is it Satin Doll or the singer? And then that final meaningless throway tag of "and that'n" to finish the song with a whimper. I would have written "back at my Manhattan flat with my tan Satin Doll".

Sorry Mr. Mercer, the opening "Cigarette holder" line is marvelous, but the song is all downhill from there.

My 92 year old Mother and her friends thought the words were very upbeat but couldn't remember them all. Now that they have them they believe that this tune should be our second National Anthem! We certainly could use something positive in our lives in this day and age!

Comments: Today I was sorting through some old boxes and came across a music box shaped like an old river boat. This used to belong to my grandfather, who passed away over 15 years ago. My son was only 9 at the time of his passing, and this music box was to be passed on to him, someday. My son is now 24. He just graduated with his masters Degree in Science and will be working on a river as a Fisheries Biologist. You can imagine the tears that formed in my eyes, when I wound the music box and Moon River began to play. What a touching gift from his late great grandfather. Of course, this prompted me to find out more about this song. Thanks so much for a wonderful website

We all only knew a little of the lyrics, but most of the melody was in our brains. So we just build some words around the known lyrics.
It was helpful today reading the complete lyrics learning about Huckleberry friends and I'm going to read the book, Our Huckleberry friend very soon.
As I know 'Moon River' was President J.F.Kennedys most favorite song.
Best regards and thank you.
