Comments: I have just 'found' this site and not had much time to peruse it but any site dedicated to MERCER has go to be good.... I got into JHM many years ago when I casually heard 'Spring, spring, spring'and suddenly realised what amazing lyrics they were for what was just a novelty number(...If for the stork you pine, consider the porcupine...!!)But it was my love of Bobby Darin that brought it all together on the album 'Two of a Kind' which has got to be the best twosome compilation ever - including Mercer and Crosby. I will get ecstatic if I go on so I'll sign off for now and get back to the site. Oh, and Thanks.

Comments: Re: Song Of India: Johnny wrote a superb lyric to this old (originally Russian) song, by Rimsky-Korzakoff. Mario Lanza recorded it in 1953, and beautifully!! Mel Torme, in his autobio, mentions that recording, and mentions those "miraculous lyrics" by Johnny. I've never heard anyone else sing those wonderful lyrics. I wonder if Johnny wrote those lyrics especially for Mario Lanza?? I suppose that is possible. Curious. If you've never heard that Lanza recording, you should!! It is on CD. It is superb, in every way!! Ciao.

Comments: Re: Autumn Leaves: I presume that when Johnny wrote the English lyrics to "Les Feuilles Mortes" (Autumn Leaves), he did not write English lyrics to the rarely heard verse?? Am I correct?? I've never heard the verse sung in English. By the way, Robert Goulet recorded the entire song, in the original French, and it is superb!! C'est magnifique!! (to quote a Cole Porter song title). Ciao.

Comments: I love that song which reminds me of my youth in Paris. Now I teach privately and some of my adult students learn French and have shown a strong interest in learning with such songs which they hear from my CD. The home page (in French) was quite difficult to find and so was the song (in French). I wish I could find other French songs in French on the internet. Especially E. Piaf. thank you. Leda

Comments: Greetings -
So comprehensive, yet I am searching for more info on "When the World Was Young"; traditional French folk melody combined with Mercer's?? Truth or rumor? Also, how about his youth -I once interviewed a pal of his from the early days in Manhattan who said Johnny arrived a stow-away on a ship that came from North Carolina or some southern state. Huh? Mr.Tinturin went on to say that Johnny had lived with his family for his first year or so in NYC. Wondering if all this is truth or lore.
Great site - it represents lots of work and dedication.
Elizabeth

Comments: Our family always loved the great American popular songs. We would sometimes sit around the dining room table on Sunday evenings with a thick book of lyrics that had been compiled over the decades by my aunts.

After hearing big bands accompanying vocals by Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Williams and others, I took up the trombone, which became the focus of my life.

Johnny Mercer, who worked with the Whiteman band and on the radio with Benny Goodman and Glen Gray, wrote a substantial share of the lyrics to the songs that drew me into the serious study of music.

To me, it's a tragedy that the world today is either missing or ignoring that kind of talent.

Comments: Johnny Mercer was my Grandfather's brother and my Great Uncle. I would see him each time he came to Savannah to visit family and we had some good times together. I remember one time he came to a party I was at and before he left the party he wrote a song about everyone at the party. He was truly a genius with words. One of my fondest memories of my Uncle Johnny was when he asked me to take him over to Goat Island off Tybee Island in my boat. He had heard that there were wild goats over there and wanted to see them. I was a teenager at the time and he was in his late 40's. It was a really hot and humid summer day with absolutely no breeze and we did a lot of walking through the mud and marsh around the island trying to find the wild goats. Actually, we could smell them far in advance of seeing them! Some years later in 1965 when I got married, Uncle Johnny sent us a check for $250 for a wedding gift and told us to "buy a sofa or something with it." He mentioned in his letter that he was sending "$50 a pound for the five(5) pounds he lost with me that day walking around in the mud on Goat Island"!
Some people might not realize that Johnny Mercer was also a very good artist when he found time to paint and I can attribute my putting brush to canvas and being an artist myself to my Uncle Johnny. One Christmas when he was visiting us in Savannah, I decided to show him some of my art work. He said I was "pretty good at it" which inspired me to pursue the craft. He and I also had the same interest in subject matter depicting life in the coastal low country of Georgia and South Carolina and scenes from Gullah/Geechee culture and peaceful times gone by. My Uncle Johnny put the same emotions and feelings on canvas with his paintings that he put on paper with his wonderful lyrics and songs which will live on forever. He was a real genius and also a very kind and humble man and I thank God I was able to know him and spend some time with him.

Comments: I saw a movie about his life when I was about 13 yrs old, I'm now 62, and I remember the movie very well, like I saw it recently. It affected me emotionally, and directed me towards my love of music. I listen to music every day of the week, at all hours. My favorite is "Doo-Wop", or known then as R & B mainly. I discovered the "blues" before my teen years, and Doo-Wop followed. Like, Mercer, I play the "Ivory" (keyboards) but have experience on trumpet and drums. Always wanted to play guitar, but I left that to my son, who does very well on his strings. When I first heard "Moon River" I knew it was written by an experienced songwriter, but then I didn't know it was Mercer. I liked the Jerry Butler version better than Andy Wiliams, but both are good. And how I remember "Glow Little Glow Worm" and many of his other songs. Although not in my era, I even liked Hoagie, in the movies. Bob W.

Comments: I used to live in Wilmington NC not far from the Johnny Mercer Pier and I came across your web page where you asked about the pier in Wrightsville Beach NC. Yes it was named after Johnny Mercer and it was destroyed by hurricane after hurricane. It has since been rebuilt out of a concrete material so that hurricanes can no longer damage it. I used to work with the girl that her in-laws own the pier. Yes, I lived in Wilmington, NC and moved away for some crazy reason. I do miss it and I do recommend Wilmington as a vacation spot. Lots of beaches, lots to do. Take care.
