I'm a "saloon
entertainer" here. I just fell into this site. I'll be
sticking it into "my favorites", as I regard the
lyrics of Johnny Mercer.
Some parents leave their children monetary wealth. Mine left me
the music of the 30's&40's. A large part of that being the
lyrics of Mercer to the music of Carmichael and Arlen. In my
opinion the most imaginative lyrist of all time. "Midnight
Sun" blew me away as a child and was one of the first songs
I put in my repertoire when I left working with groups and bands
and started working alone.
I'll be visiting from time to time. |

I remember Margaret Whiting from when I was younger. I loved her
voice. During the summer of 1966 in Milwaukee Wisconsin she was
doing a show at the Melody Top Theater and for several weeks she
stayed at the Milwaukee Inn where I worked. I remember she had
Mondays off and would come down to eat. Usually Mondays were
very slow at work and several of us would sit around with her
and talk for an hour or so when she was done eating. She was a
wonderful person with many good stories about her life and
career. I remember meeting her daughter while she was staying
there.
I would love to see her again. |

I regarded Johnny
Mercer as a genius and three of his songs are favorites of mine.
The first man I was in love with was ironically named John
Mercer, but they were not related...My 3 favorite Mercer songs:
Fools Rush In, Skylark, and Moon River...just beautiful...And
two of my friends had Days of Wine & Roses played for their
first dance with their husbands at their weddings...great song! |

The happiest times
when I was a child was when my mom and I would listen and sing
to Johnny Mercer music. I couldn't have been more than 3 years
old. I remember something about Ella Mae Morris having friends
in San Diego and we went to visit with them and her one time.
Johnny was always my favorite artist, he was always up and happy

Richard Stahl who was a jeweler in Chicago in the 40's &
50's who made a diamond saxophone pin for Harry James and

I've been searching
for British Forces Network, Hamburg references, and hit this
website. It's great! Really puts me in the frame of mind to
contemplate my father's experiences. He was with BFN in 1946 and
I'm trying to discover everything I can. Anyone help? His name
was Harold Gooch. He died in 1991, so the 50th anniversary of

Hi! Just did a
search for my grandfather who I never knew... Antone Iavello and
happened upon this site. My grandmother is still alive at 90 and
in great health. My grandfather died long ago... In the 50s. My
grandmother never remarried and raised 7 children by herself.
Occasionally, she gets royalty checks from music my grandfather
either composed or songs he wrote.

While researching
breast cancer in my cat I decided to Johnny Mercer's words to
"Whistling Away the Dark",
an unjustly neglected lyric of his. I'm currently learning it,
with my guitar teacher's help. He has done a simple but
effective arrangement for guitar and voice. Thanks to you Johnny
Mercer and of course, Henry Mancini. Thanks. Nothing good like

I just got thru
reading Skylark and loved the book. I have sung so many of the
songs that JM wrote lyrics to and didn't know that he was the
lyrisist.
I have been asked to sing at a wedding in Savannah and am very
excited to be going to visit JM's birthplace.
Are there any more books on his life and music? Did he write an
autobiography?

I was looking for
who wrote the song "Laura",
because I heard a rendition of it by Nino Bravo, of Spain. Turns
out it was good 'ol Johnny Mercer. I have a record of Johnny
singing with the incomparable Bobby
Darin...they don't write music like that anymore, nor are
