I bought a
Christmas CD at Starbuck's Coffee and Johnny Mercer and Margaret
Whiting sang a wonderful song together. I had never heard of
either one and so I looked them up. What wonderful talents and a
pleasure to listen to. The song was "Baby, It's Cold

I am a Country
musician in the Atlanta area. Although I perform a completely
different genre of music, I still listen to Mercer for
inspiration. Quite frankly, I feel he was more than likely the
best of all the American songwriters. I have his complete

Recently returned from Savannah after attending Johnny
Mercer's 94th posthumous birthday celebration in his
"majestic" theater. It just does not get any better
than that, to be in a room with 2500 MERCER LOVERS.. A whole
afternoon of his music, plus a jazz band with their
interpretation! They also played JM's and my late Mom's (Sadie)
song, "I Wanna Be Around".

I am writing a book
about Bobby Driscoll, the star of Song of the South. I ran
across information about Johnny Mercer and his album "Tales
of Uncle Remus". I never knew how incredibly extensive Mr.
Mercer's career was, not just his better known work. One of my
favorite songs is "Moon River", and I am one of the
people who treasures Audrey Hepburn's version. She can't sing,
and she does it beautifully. Much like Bobby Driscoll's
"singing" in Peter Pan. "You Can Fly" is a
classic too, and Bobby's inability to sing, is as charming as
Audrey's. Thank God for songwriters like Mr. Mercer, who can
make the voice secondary to the music and lyrics, and to
touching the heart and soul of the singer. Thank You, Bobby and
Johnny you made the world a better place to live.

First learned of
Johnny Mercer when I heard some songs from the album he did with
Bobby Darrin. I was hooked. His voice and comedic timing had me.
I then heard Barry Manilow tell of the Dixie Mercer giving him
his songs. He sang "And When October Goes" which I had
heard Rosemary Clooney sing and had loved it but did not know
who wrote it. The words to that song perfectly describe the
October days of my childhood. After learning Mr. Mercer wrote
the words, I had to learn more about the man and his music. I
think I have hit on a the work of a man who is not as well known
as he should be by people that like stories told by music. |
