having just returned (5/12/99) from Savannah, where a lot of the talk is about Johnny Mercer, I just wanted to say he wrote great music because he lived in a very beautiful place. Savannah & the people are very friendly and as lovely as the city.

Having studied and learned the lyrics of all the greats, Porter, I. Gershwin, Hart, Sondheim et alia, I have come to the inevitable conclusion that I would rather listen to a Mercer lyric than anyone else. He was truly a huckleberry friend.

Have always enjoyed Mercer - one of the first record purchases of my youth was "Ugly Chile", which he sang but did not write, and on the other side (78rpm) was, I believe, "Li'l Augie."

Mercer's lyrics continue to be a joy to sing today. From Early Autumn to Skylark to Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing In A Hurry, his wit and craft inspire still. This site is a welcome addition to my exploration of "20th Century Song".

Like this page I grew up dancing to the tunes of Jonny Mercer in the 40's. I also had a chance see him in San Franciso. When we lived in Oakland as a teenager. I also have some of his records in my colection of records of the big bands. Check this page again another time

I have signed the guestbook before. However, I want to call your attention to an essay by Gene Lees in his book, Singers and the Song, published by Oxford University Press. The article on Johnny Mercer is called "Roses in the Morning". Lees is an author of several biographies--Oscar Peterson and Woody Herman. He also publishes his own newsletter as well as being a lyricist. He was a good friend of Mercer. I think the essay helps to "round out" the character of Johnny Mercer, and it should be read.

As a jazz musician of over 25 years, I think this is great. I'm a Ga. native and very proud of Johnny Mercer. I love to play his music.

Delighted to see a Johnny Mercer page. What a great humen being. I met Johnny Mercer in 1950 in front of "Coffee Dan's" on Vine Street in Hollywood. Of all things, and true to his nature, he was showing a shoe shine boy how to shine shoes: the shoe shine boy on the chair. I dearly love Johnny Mercer, his music, and his wonderful personality. I don't think that "Dream", especially as recorded by his good friend Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers will ever be equalled as a great ballard. I also like his humorus stuff like "Glow-worm", "My Sugar is So Refined" and "Conversation While Dancing" among others. If someone can tell me where to find 'Conversation...', I'd be grateful if you let me know. Keep up the great web site on Johnny Mercer, a true human being, southerner, and American. John V.

I'm currently at work on an original revue of Mercer songs, and this website has been a splendid resource. The song list was of particular help. I'm enormously impressed by the depth and breadth of material available on the site, and with the intelligent manner in which it's been organized. A very worthy tribute to "That Southern Gentleman".

Johnny was the consummate American lyricist . He really captured the spirit of everyday America. "Was it dusty on the train' - a perfect line about trains in the 40's. What a guy.

MY FAVORITE SONGWRITER. NOBODY WROTE BETTER LYRICS

Johnny Mercer is my favorite lyricist,composer and performer since WWII (my teen-age years). I was never aware of the extent of his repertoire and records. He, truly, was the most popular music man to my depression generation. I visited Savannah recently (February 1999) and stood in awe at his grave site. (On his gravestone is inscribed "And the Angels Sing" and on his wife's "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby". If you are a fan of Johnny's you should visit his grave site at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.

Skylark was my favorite song; used to date a pilot an we played it over ano over again; and then, have not heard it until tonight. Thank you.

I have a large collection of Johnny Mercer songs and performances, but my favorite CD is An Evening with Johnny Mercer done at the YMHA in New York City

Johnny Mercer remains a standard by which lyricists can measure their progress in pursuit of the perfect lyric. In my own compositions, I owe a tremendous debt to Mr. Mercer's sense of style. One day, I hope to write with such clarity.

Did J.Mercer ever write and/or sing a song ,'If I Knew Then', or something similar. If he did I would like to get the music & lyrcics on a CD or cassette. I have been a fan for many years ,and saw him perform at a few places. Im 70 years young, and playing his music helps me stay young. Thank You
