However, I want to call your attention to an essay by Gene Lees in his book, Singers and the Song, published by Oxford University Press. The article on Johnny Mercer is called "Roses in the Morning". Lees is an author of several biographies--Oscar Peterson and Woody Herman. He also publishes his own newsletter as well as being a lyricist. He was a good friend of Mercer. I think the essay helps to "round out" the character of Johnny Mercer, and it should be read. Thanks for the work which obviously went into this "labor of love" Name: John Vidos Email:jvidos@bellsouth.net Location: Abbeville, La USA Date: Monday, April 12, 1999 at 21:36:41 Comments: Delighted to see a Johnny Mercer page. What a great humen being. I met Johnny Mercer in 1950 in front of "Coffee Dan's" on Vine Street in Hollywood. Of all things, and true to his nature, he was showing a shoe shine boy how to shine shoes: the shoe shine boy on the chair. I dearly love Johnny Mercer, his music, and his wonderful personality. I don't think that "Dream", especially as recorded by his good friend Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers will ever be equalled as a great ballard. I also like his humorus stuff like "Glow-worm", "My Sugar is So Refined" and "Conversation While Dancing" among others. If someone can tell me where to find 'Conversation...', I'd be grateful if you let me know. Keep up the great web site on Johnny Mercer, a true human being, southerner, and American. John V. I was never aware of the extent of his repertoire and records. He, truly, was the most popular music man to my depression generation. I visited Savannah recently (February 1999) and stood in awe at his grave site. (On his gravestone is inscribed "And the Angels Sing" and on his wife's "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby". If you are a fan of Johnny's you should visit his grave site at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. It's clear that this is a real labor of love, and I'm sure I speak for many people when I tell you how much it is appreciated. I wish every great songwriter could have someone as devoted as you designing and maintaining a website about him (or, in the case of Dorothy Fields, her). I very much appreciate the biographical information and the rare songs you faxed me just before my Johnny Mercer concert in Fort Lauderdale in February. I gave a better concert because of your help! I announced the Johnny Mercer website address during the concert. I hope you have had some good response to it. This website is a wonderful use of technology in the service of art. Thank you for helping to keep these marvelous songs alive, and for helping those of us who perform them to have access to information and songs it might take weeks to find without your help.
