Comments: I was delighted to run across this site while searching for the lyrics of "I Thought About You" by Van Heusen and Marcer - a song that evokes what it was like to be on a train at night, rolling through towns seen in brief flashes of light (best recording I know of is by Bob Hope's wife Dolores, recorded when she was about 70 years old). I first heard Johnny Mercer's wonderfully imperfect voice and witty, jazzy style on the "Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin St." broadcasts when I was a child. He and Hoagy Carmichael are linked in my memory for their great songs and distinctive vocal styles. Thanks for putting up this site.

Comments: Always a fan of JM. Went to NYC to see "Dreams". Great presentation with exception of "I remember you". One of his greatest ballads should not have been done up-beat. John Pizzarelli is fantastic and his CD with the tribute to JM was spectacular. Leslie Ann Warren was stunningly beautiful as ever.
Margaret Whiting is a great trouper. Wish the show had prevailed.

Comments: Reminiscing back to early youth during WWII, Johnny Mercer was my hero and I memorized and sang (in the shower) every one of his tunes. It is a de ja vu to listen to any of his tunes today and 'Candy' tops the list ! After much searching, I recently found a copy of his recording from 1946 of 'Huggin and a Chalkin'. He and his music are legends that will never be forgotten.

Comments: A gentleman named Roger Burgoon signed the guestbook in April, saying he had an extensive collection of sheet music.
Unfortunately, some of his message did not appear on my page, and his e-mail was not there, either.
Please contact me to discuss how I may obtain copies of the piano sheet music, not necessarily for collecting, although that would be great; but just for my personal piano playing enjoyment. Enjoyed Miss Emma several times before her passing.
Thank you so much...one excited fan to another.

Comments: Been searching for a wonderful singer who recorded "When the World was Young" in the fifties called Bob Sands with no luck till I spied the Johnny Mercer recording of a 'Recital' at 92nd Street with Margaret Whiting and Robert Sands. This song is not on the disc but at least I wasn't dreaming after all.

Anyone heard of him and what became of him please and a tape of his redition of this song would be appreciated.

Have written to Margaret Whiting today and hope she may have some news for me.

Comments: Hi

Very interesting musical bio and well put together

One song you did not mention (well you can't mention them all) is When the World was Young. The reason for referring to this number is the recording I had in 1950/51 by a remarkable singer Bob Sands. Fire destroyed the 78 (Capital or maybe Brunswick) and I Never heard of Bob Sands again. Can you trace it possibly as I have searched for two years on the Net.

With my thanks

David

They love them, though they all have their different favorites. On the way home today I was listening to RTE radio from the Republic of Ireland and they were playing three of Mercer's tunes to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his death. New York City

On the Broadway show, "Blues in the Night". It starred three women, Leslie Uggams, Jean DuShon and Debbie Shapiro. Miss DuShon had done the show before, outside of New York and was flown in to replace the ailing Ruth Brown, just three weeks before it opened on the Great White Way.

There were good reviews for the three stars, especially for Miss DuShon, who strangely was not pushed to receive a Tony nod as "best actress in a musical".

She certainly had what it took to take the award after receiving standing ovations each night after singing Bessie Smith's haunting, "Wasted Life Blues".

Comments: I work at Braille Institute, one of the organizations sponsored by the Mercer Foundation. I surf in every year to get anecdotes and info for our annual Johnny Mercer Festival concert. The information and links get better and more helpful all the time. I especially appreciated the information on the Foundation website, which links from here, but the photo format sure makes it laborious to get through. And printing out the information is problematic -- it doesn't read well. But thanks for the info -- I appreciate it!

right age to well remember his songs. Looking at the list I'm amazed at
what songs he wrote. Like "Moon River", I thought Andy Williams wrote that! <smile>

I just pick one or two that my wife didn't remember hearing and sang them to her. <laughter> She finally admitted she "might" have heard them. <more smiles>
