I remember many a night on watch on the old bucket, the USS Prevail,AM 107 listening to
the music of Johnny Mercer. It gave one the feeling of home, and out in the South Pacific
it was a comfort. My favorite song was DREAM. Thanks so much for this work that has been
done. I am new to the world of web, only had my computer for about a month. Thank you.

In 1976 I was living in New York, out of work with time on my hands. On a Wednesday
morning shortly after Johnny Mercer died, there was a memorial service for Johnny Mercer
at the Music Box Theater which Irving Berlin made available for the occasion. I feel
fortunate to have been there, sitting right behind the VIP section. Harold Arlen spoke,
Margaret Whiting sang, and there were many others; I wish I could remember them all. A few
weeks ago I was in Savannah and couldn't help but think of Johnny Mercer, who I would have
identified with that city even if it hadn't been for Midnight in the Garden of Good and
Evil. The music was probably the best part of the movie. While in Savannah I visited
Johnny Mercer's grave at Bonaventure Cemetary. This website is wonderful; I'm glad so many
people appreciate a great lyricist, truly an American poet.

A great site, and a wonderful tribute to one of America's greatest lyricist. He was
such a genius with simple words that made wonderfully beautiful and moving songs. His
songs will live forever, and he will live forever in our memory. A few years before his
untimely death, I had a chance to meet him. I found him to be a graciously nice and warm
gentleman. Today, I visited his and his wife's (Ginger) gravesite, and in my mind I could
hear-"Dream," "Skylark," "You Must Have Been A Beautiful
Baby." These are a few of my favorite Johnny Mercer songs! I am quite sure he is now
entertaining those souls in Heaven with his wit and talent!!!! Thanks, Johnny!!!!!!! David

It's quite something now, something for we Savannahians to be proud of. Oh, and if anyone
wants to move to Moon River, an old house is for sale that still belongs to some of
Johnny's Savannah friends, it's an old fourties river house on some beautiful land. It's
two doors down from his Savannah house pictured above. You can also learn some about
Johnny from a book I recently acwquired, "Sights and Sounds of Savannah Jazz",

There is nothing finer that good music, and Johnny Mercer wrote some of the best. Saw
the musical "Dream" on Broadway and loved it. Brought back all good memories.
Was sad to see it close so soon after it opened. There is no pleasing some critics. But

That is something that she got from her dad. She has been very very nice to me over the

I didn't know until after his death in 1976 that Johnny Mercer was a relative of mine.
He was, in fact, my paternal grandmother's first cousin. I believe that makes him my first
cousin twice removed? I'd always appreciated his music -- even more so after learning the
family connection. I have a decent singing voice and a better-than-average way with words
... but nothing to compare to his talent! I'm pleased to know that so many people

way with a phrase. A beautiful young cabaret artist in NYC passed away a while back her
name was Nancy LaMott. If you get a chance find a copy of her Johnny Mercer CD. I think
that if there is a Heaven they have met now and he can hear how much she loved his music

Great to have a web page for Johnny Mercer, to my mind, the greatest lyricist America
has produced. He could write with anybody, could write a homey simple score like Lil Abner
and then write the beautiful, sophisticated lyric "Midnight Sun"! I told Ginger,
his wife, that I considered him to be the Robert Frost of the South. It's difficult to
listen to the radio for an hour and not to hear one of his songs. Singers should get down
on their knees every day and pray at the shrine of Johnny Mercer. he left them so many
great lyrics to interpret ... forever!!

Just a few words about when I met Johnny Mercer and how we got together to write a few
songs. We co-wrote three songs and we had plans to write many more. If Johnny were with us
today we would have a catalogue of beautiful songs. I have been a musician/songwriter all
my life. I learned the sax as a small boy in New Jersey and as I grew up I became
interested in writing music. I composed the music for my high school graduating class in
1938. After playing with the big bands of Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Raymond Scott and
others I moved to California and became a studio musician. That was in 1948. This is when
I played with Jerry Gray, Billy Vaughn and many more recording artists. In the late 50's
and early 60's Johnny and I met on some sessions and we became great friends from then on.
He always loved to be with musicians. I was a close friend of Marshall Robbins who ran
Johnny's publishing firm Commander Publications. We used to hang out in the office every
week. Finally Johnny and I decided to write something together. We composed I'VE WAITED
FOR A WALTZ. Columbia recorded it with Tony Bennett but unfortunately it was never
released. Our second song was BABY-0 which Dean Martin recorded for Reprise. That was
followed by YOUNG and FREE which to date has not been recorded. All this time Johnny and I
spent a lot of time together. He always loved to eat at any hamburger stand. Watch the
crowds go by and talk about anything. Just hang out. We always mentioned our families,
music, musicians and bands. He was the greatest. Just look at all the songs he wrote with
those great collaborators. I was blessed to have known Johnny and to have written a few
songs with him.

I first become a Mercer fan long before I ever met him. I was working at Warner Bros
studios in Burbank, the year was 1938, and Mercer was writing brilliant lyrics for Warner
musicals, either with Harry Warren or with Harold Arlen. There was one musical called
"Garden of the Moon", and Mercer worked on some of the lyrics (along with Al
Dubin). His unmistakble talent shines through a couple of brilliant songs. One is
"I'm In Love With The Lady On The Two Cent Stamp." Check it out; it's a great
lyric. So is the second one I will never forget."The Girl Friend of the Whirling
Dervish." ..... I think that one goes..."She's the girl friend of the whirling
dervish She's his best friend to his face. But every night when there's mellow moonlight
And he's out dervishing with all his might She gives him the runaround." How about
that? I've always loved it. "He dreams of a Hindu honeymoon But every night when he
goes out to make an honest rupee, She goes out to make a lot of whoopee." He topped
it! How much better can it get? Well, one day, on the call sheet, they announced on one of
the stages, for a picture called "Going Places," on the set would be Mr Louis
Armstrong and Miss Maxine Sullivan. What would they be shooting? A production number
called "Jeepers Creepers." Who do you think spent the entire day down on the
stage, playing hooky from my publicity department job, and basking in reflected glory,
while Louis and Maxine recorded that great Mercer number for posterity. YOU BET - ME! So
I've been a Mercer fan for lo, these sixty years, right? He's gone - but long may his
lyrics live on! ....I can quote "The Lady On The Two Cent Stamp," too! Is it any
wonder I went after Johnny first - when I wrote "They're Playing our Song." ?

Last night, I visited Philadelphia's Academy of Music for "Legends of Song,"
with performances by Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, the John Pizzarelli Trio, and Julius
LaRosa, substituting for Margaret Whiting who has recently broken her knee, but is now
recuperating. Julius, John and Margaret had previously performed a Johnny Mercer show with
Peter Nero which was broadcast on PBS, so Johnny Mercer's spirit was very much a part of
last night's show. Today, I met again with Julius for a chat and an interview for
CityCabaret, and he discussed his feelings for Mercer lyrics, and his great admiration for
Johnny M. We also shared our gratitude for your site and dedication to keeping the Mercer

I've been a fan of Johnny Mercer ever since picking up a 78 of his at a flea market as
a kid. (The 'Capitol' label caught my eye.) I put it on and was stunned to hear what can
only be called the sound of lost America. A CD I've been playing a lot lately is a
collection of Mercer's recordings. I like his versions of other people's songs as well as
his own. His singing is soulful and often humorous; like his lyrics. If I ever run an
all-night diner, I'm going to fill the jukeboxes with Mercer songs.

The first record I ever bought with my own money was Judy's renditionof The
Atcheson-Topeka and the Santa Fe. I loved it, practically wore the record out. At some
point I heard Johnny sing it, I had to have his renditon, I waited quite a while before I
got it. Can you wear out CD's?
