In April 1997, I went to New York for the Commissioning of USS The Sullivans DDG 68
and decided to take in a few Broadway shows. They included, Victor Victoria, Miss Saigon,
and Dream, a Jonny Mercer review with, among others, Leslie Ann Warren and Margaret
Whiting. I personally found it a very enjoyable evening, but I understand it had a short
run. Just sitting there listening to the Mercer tunes reminded me of what a significant
role he had in our culture, and the number of times I have hummed the tunes and spoken the
lyrics that he was so renown for. Many of them have become a part of our vocabulary. I
hope the show is able to go on the road to bring back Johnny Mercer to many more of his
old fans, and from what I notice, in the audience, some new fans.

I met Mr. Mercer at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles when I was just a teenager. My
dad was a big band singer and I knew Mr. Mercer's work through my father's interpretations
of his songs. Now, beyond the age of 50, I'm still a fan. My comments here are prompted by
seeing a screening of "In the Garden of Good and Evil" today (12/21/97).
SKYLARK, written in association with Mr. Carmichael, opened and closed the film. It
reminded me that the best of lyrics and music continue to be a subtle inpspiration when
I'm in the process of producing my own movies. Thank's, Mr. Mercer.

Every time I ride down Mecer Blvd. on Wilmington Island or wander through

added more zip to the area. Residents of Savannah just love to talk bad about the book and

more of Mercer's music when the movie about Lady Chablis is finished!

In 1945-6, I was an enlisted man in the Air Force (ARMY Air Force at that time). I
kept with me, wherever I went, a windup record player and a case containing 50 shellac
disks -- they weighed about half a pound each and had to be protected like eggs. Artists
included Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, etc. -- but mostly Johnny Mercer, along with Paul
Weston, Jo Stafford, the Pied Pipers, . . . Now, some fifty years later, I still have some
of these records; they're in a box in the attic and I hope they haven't sagged too badly
from the heat. They're great stuff. By the way, I attended Georgia Tech, 1947-52,and one
of my friends there was Hugh Mercer (a familiar name to Midnight in the Garden fans!) of
Savannah, who I believe was Johnny's nephew. I wonder where he is now - ? Hugh, if you
read this, send me an E-mail note. - Bob

Johnny Mercer was very special to me as my mother grew up in the same neighborhood
as he did. We have been to Savannah many times and always go see Emma Kelly who always
sings many of Johnny's songs. Your website is very informative. I'll be back.

Wonderful tribute to the late, great Johnny Mercer. I have always enjoyed his music
and especially the one he composed for the musical St.Louis Woman, with the wonderful
Pearl Bailey signing "It's a Woman's Perogative," and "Legalize my
Name." I,myself am working on a site honouring the late, great Ethel Waters and would
welcome any input on Mercer's association with Waters to put in an article I am writing on
her career. Feel free to write to me at my e-mail address above.

I grew up in Johnny's house on Moon River. I grew up to the lyrics of Moon River and
many of his other songs. Each and every one of them sends chills down my spine when I hear
them. He was truly a blessing to us all. He is Savannah's true native son.

Hi Steve...as I mentioned before, I grew up lying on the floor staring up at the
greenlight on a floorsize Philco radio. Of course there was the Lone Ranger, Hop Harrigan,
Terry and the Pirates...but better than all of them was Mr. M, Paul Weston, Jo Stafford
and the rest who made it really swing. Kind of a shame that no one is really having fun
with lyrics and melody they way they did. Keep it up and count me as a loyal supporter.
