Comments: Terrific website. Just posted a review for Sinatra's new "Christmas Collection" at Amazon.com and found another reason to talk about my favorite lyricist. (I first referenced Johnny Mercer in my first Sinatra review for the 3-CD "The Capitol Years" and never tire of telling people that Johnny was the greatest (non-theatrical) lyricist who ever lived. It's a testament to his greatness (and deceptive simplicity) that my granddaughter Emily quickly picked up the words to "I Remember You" and "I Thought About You" when I sang her to sleep with them, starting age two. Anyway, thanks for creating this wonderful website. Keep up the good work!
God bless America!

Comments: Hi,
An anonymous person in Chesieres Switzerland has bought all three of my CDs. Wishing to thank him I tried to find him. Using
Google: "chesieres jazz", to my pleasant
surprise brought up your site!
I have been a singer/muso/composer since 1954 (My golden anniversary now).
In that 50 years many of Johnny's songs
have graced my repertoire.
I have been signing off since 1984 or so
with "Blues In The Night" All apologies
to Johnny, I never realised it was his song. I heard Louis do it with Oscar Petersen & fell in love with it.
Thank you for being you Johnny!
Best regards, Mark Whitty

Comments: Looking at people's comments about how "Moon River" fits in with B at T, I think the basic point has been lost. I don't believe much ground can be covered either by looking into the huckleberry story from the author's past. instead, more may be seen by comparing holly's two selves with Twain's "Huckleberry Finn." Next to about 4 or 5 other american books, "H.F." is considered the finest book to have ever come from an american author. it follows the adventures of teenaged Huck Finn as he runs (or floats) away from home by coasting on an old raft with a run away slave, Jim. Taking place in the pre-Civil War South, the book contrasts the pain of slavery with Jim's love for Huck as Huck confronts some of life's deep rooted problems that adults (and America) shirk from fixing as they abandon childhood.
Huck and Jim seem to have little to live for: As a runaway, Jim faces lynching if caught. As a slave, obviously he faces mere servitude. As a youngster, Huck faces a fatherless life, a withered, zealous aunt, and the general back stabbing nature of the world.
As he and Jim coast easily down the river, however, they're able to come to some understanding about life, which does not include becoming resigned to its depressing and unjust aspects. This is no sudden epiphany for Huck, but rather a slowly developing shift in his mind, which stems in part from stepping out of society, forming his own "nation" on the raft, and learning (most importantly) from the sage Jim.

B at T shows both Holly and her neighbor (I'm forgetting his name...Fred!) as Huckleberry and Jim characters, drifting down the morass of American ennui, which for each character stems from different but similar forces: Holly misses home, has hurt not a few people, regrets serious mistakes, longs for a husband, security. She has changed her name, revealing later in the movie, that in fact, she is nameless, just as her cat--symptomitic of the american life, where it seems we live anonymously.
Similarly, "Fred" has writer's block, may not be that great of a writer in the first place, has the ignominy of seeing his book in the dried up library where no one knows him or his work. He's locked into an affair with an older, depressed and rich woman who is using him to escape her own desperate life.
In Moon River, the words sound as if it is Jim from H.F who is singing to his "huckleberry friend" as if huck was asleep. I'm don't know where in the book it occurs, but i'm sure a similar scene in which Jim addresses the moon or at leasts prays by himself. while sad, the song still envisions better times ahead, which, while coasting down the mississippi, Jim and Huck can only dream about having many people after them and only crooks ahead of them.

but the love between jim and Huck serves as the buffer between the world's injustices and trials, and the unconquerable human spirit that the book aims to uncover for us.

similarly, in b at t, holly's lust for life, while over the top, is beautiful especially in place of the anonymous streets of new york. only tiffany's serves as a temporary respite from the the city's grayness. even at the store, holly encounters the gray, conceited (but helpful...) attitude that pervades the city (or nation.)
but holly need to be loved and to love properly hasn't been stifled by the city, though the movie begins with the possibility of losing her battle becoming more of a reality. while she sings her song in the movie, i don't believe she's thinking (yet) of Fred as her huckleberry friend--that comes at the end. rather, i think she's singing to a part of herself that has been submerged in the lifeless waters of new york (or choose your adversary). the idea, however, that like Jim and Huck, she travels to a better place, provides a more profound reading to the her seemingly stagnant position, from which, she longs to escape. i think that coupled with Fred, she has found herself in another person, which gives her the greatest chance or surviving, just as huck and jim ultimately survive their harrowing and at times lonely odyssey.

Comments: Help. I am trying to search down a version of Baby, It's Cold Outside. I first heard it two eyars ago on a Wine Rack CD (as in the wine store). It sounded like an older recording.

It began with a door openning, a gust of wind, then a door shutting, and is followed by a simple duet. It is the best version of the song I have heard, yet no one else seems to remember it. Does anyone know what recording I am talking about? Please help.....

Happy Holidays....

I remember him as a genial and brilliant raconteur who could knock you on your ass laughing with, for instance stories in the Gullah dialect. An amazing gentleman, sorely missed. I have one of his watercolors, a view of Independence Hall in Philly. Not bad at all. Favorite lyric: I Thought About You.

Comments: It is a pleasure to discover your site. I am enjoying it.

I miss hearing this great music on the radio. It is time for a station to provide the great American song book on FM in New York.

Recently, I visited CHWO in Toronto, Canada. They play standards. They are a 50,000 watt AM station at 740 on the dial. They are number six in the Toronto market.

Now if that can be achieved in Canada, their is no reason this can't happen in New York.

Their is an audience that makes money that wants this music again. We haven't had an attempt at this format since December, 1998.

If the listeners in New York can protect WQXR, a 24 hour commercial classical station then they can do the same for American popular music on FM with a signal from the Empire State Building and no competition to speak of.

Thank you for reading this e-mail. Feel free to add this to your guestbook.

Comments: I have to congratulate you folks on this website; it's pretty damn impressive. Sorry to say I didn't know about it until this evening - but what a treat! Johnny Mercer is my nominee for all-time best lyricist (with Larry Hart running a close second). And Margaret Whiting is a dead-on tie for my all-time favorite female vocalist (along with Jo Stafford). Sad as hell that so few folks my age recognize these names today - I guess we 40-somethings are a dunderheaded lot. But Johnny is STILL a master - and Margaret still looks damn fine!
Best wishes to you all.

Comments: I've been humming "Moon River" for quite a few days now. It has the quality of a folk song: stunning in its 'simplicity' as to lyrics and melody. It is truly one of the great songs in the Great American Song Book, that major American contribution to the world. And JM is the first among peers!

He helped her reconstruct "It's A Good Day" and make it a better song.

were his lyrics so prolific was his output. What a talent

Comments: I interviewed Diane Schuur on Friday at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. She played When October Goes and that is when I realised how much work Barry Manilow had done on Mercer's lyrics. I had, I confess, little clue about how much Manilow worked on Mercer's lyrics although I had heard of the association. If anyone wants to hear that song tonight and the interview with Ms Schuur, we invite you at 9pm London time (2000 GMT or 4pm New York time) Sunday July 25, 2004. Welcome to London Jazz on http:www.radioheynow.com

Comments: I'm a "saloon entertainer" here. I just fell into this site. I'll be sticking it into "my favorites", as I regard the lyrics of Johnny Mercer.

Some parents leave their children monetary wealth. Mine left me the music of the 30's&40's. A large part of that being the lyrics of Mercer to the music of Carmichael and Arlen. In my opinion the most imaginative lyrist of all time. "Midnight Sun" blew me away as a child and was one of the first songs I put in my repertoire when I left working with groups and bands and started working alone.
I'll be visiting from time to time.

I remember Margaret Whiting from when I was younger. I loved her voice. During the summer of 1966 in Milwaukee Wisconsin she was doing a show at the Melody Top Theater and for several weeks she stayed at the Milwaukee Inn where I worked. I remember she had Mondays off and would come down to eat. Usually Mondays were very slow at work and several of us would sit around with her and talk for an hour or so when she was done eating. She was a wonderful person with many good stories about her life and career. I remember meeting her daughter while she was staying there.

I would love to see her again.

Comments: I regarded Johnny Mercer as a genius and three of his songs are favorites of mine. The first man I was in love with was ironically named John Mercer, but they were not related...My 3 favorite Mercer songs: Fools Rush In, Skylark, and Moon River...just beautiful...And two of my friends had Days of Wine & Roses played for their first dance with their husbands at their weddings...great song!
